1. Statement of Intent:
The first shock of destruction caused by the earthquakes of February 6, 2023, is gradually losing its effect, the shadow of a critical question has fallen on “all of us” about how to revitalize our cities in disaster areas. The term “all of us” includes not only a group of professionals but also, especially, the people of the region who lost their homes, loved ones, their cities.
The scale of destruction has become one of the largest in history due to the widespread and constant disregarding of urban regulations and ethical values. We should face this multi-layered problem. This task is for all of us.
But how is it possible? The recent history of our cities shows us that difficult and complex problems, like this, do not have easy and miraculous solutions. While crucial conditions necessitate urgent actions, decisions made in haste will pave the way for greater disasters in the future. If there is a “solution”, it can only be possible as an outcome of a process after the mutual interaction on an open platform.
In line with these preconceptions, a group of volunteers, willing to face the multi-layered problem of revitalizing our cities, came together under the name of Collective Mindset-Antioch. As a civil and independent platform, the Initiative will focus on presenting a comprehensive and well-based master plan study with a multi-layered and transparent participation process for Antioch, which is almost on the verge of extinction. We propose an open and collaborative process depending upon the physical and cultural values of Antioch and the experiences of modern city planning history. While the focus is limited to Antioch, we hope that the methodological path that will emerge at the end of this process will be a model for all our cities that suffered from disasters at different scales.
In this context, we declare that the Initiative, under the name of Collective Mindset-Antioch, is open to any contribution of experts, local people, non-governmental organizations and other actors willing to undertake the responsibility. This invitation is for “all of us”, who want to contribute.
